Where else can you find FRESH sourdough starter - not dried?

If you love bread, pancakes, bagels – you name it – you'll love sourdough baking. It's versatile, delicious, and will broaden your baking horizons! The first place to start your sourdough journey is with your own sourdough starter. Ours is descended from a starter that's been lovingly nurtured here in New England for decades. When you feed it (all you need is flour, water, and a little bit of patience), it quickly becomes your own, adapting itself to your own region and climate. Thousands of bakers before you have made wonderful sourdough bread with a bit of this same bubbling brew. Join the ranks of satisfied sourdough bakers.

Read the blog: How to feed sourdough starter

IMPORTANT: Sourdough starter is a living entity; it needs regular feeding.

Thus we recommend no more than 10 days elapse between when the sourdough starter you purchase leaves our facility, and when you give it its first feeding. Keep this in mind when choosing a delivery method; if you need help making the smartest shipping choice, please contact our customer service team.

For best results, please feed your fresh sourdough starter within 24 hours of receiving it.

Note: the fresh sourdough starter that comes in this set is processed in a facility that also packages products containing eggs, milk, soy, tree nuts, and wheat. DO NOT CONSUME RAW STARTER.

Care and feeding directions are included with your order, and are also available in our Sourdough Tips & Recipes Booklet (PDF) »

FAQ

How Do You Feed a Sourdough Starter?

If storing at room temperature

Stir the starter thoroughly. Spoon 1/2 cup (113g) starter into a bowl; either discard the remaining starter or use it in another recipe (check out this Sourdough Crackers recipe, or this one for Classic Sourdough Pancakes). Add 1 scant cup (113g) flour and 1/2 cup (113g) lukewarm water to the 1/2 cup (113g) starter in the bowl. Mix until smooth, return to its jar or crock, and cover. Repeat every 12 hours.

If storing in refrigerator

Take the starter out of the fridge; there may be a bit of liquid on top. Either drain this off or stir it in, your choice; it's simply a byproduct of the fermenting yeast. Repeat same steps as if storing at room temperature. Additionally, Allow the starter to rest at room temperature (about 70°F) for at least 2 hours; this gives the yeast a chance to warm up and get feeding. After about 2 hours, replace the starter in its storage container and refrigerate. Repeat this process about once a week.

For more details on feeding and growing your starter, storage, how to get your best results, and most importantly, knowing when it's ready to use for baking, read our helpful blog.
